Platform exclusions
When engaging with a Managed Service Provider (MSP), it's important to understand what services are typically excluded from the standard managed services agreement, as these may incur additional costs. Here are some common items that are often excluded:
-
Significant IT Projects
Large-scale IT projects, such as major network upgrades, data center migrations, or significant software implementations, are usually not included in the standard managed services contract and may be billed separately
-
Net New Users and Equipment
Adding new users or equipment beyond the initial scope can incur extra costs. These are often considered out-of-scope and billed as additional services
-
Security Breaches and Incidents
While MSPs may provide cybersecurity services, the response and remediation of actual security breaches or incidents may not be covered under the standard contract and could be billed separately
-
Third-Party Software and Hardware Support
Support for software or hardware that is already supported by a third party or specialized hardware like phone systems, printer/copiers, and cable wiring may not be included in the standard agreement
-
Setup of New Equipment
The initial setup of new equipment, such as installing new servers or workstations, is often excluded from ongoing managed services contracts and may be charged as a one-time fee
-
Disaster Recovery and Backup Services Beyond Standard Scope
While basic backup and disaster recovery services might be included, more comprehensive or customized disaster recovery plans may be excluded and billed separately
-
Modifications to Existing Systems
Any modifications to deliverables or systems that were not performed by the MSP or its authorized personnel can be excluded from the standard agreement and may incur additional costs
-
Third-Party Services
Services provided by third-party vendors, such as internet service providers or cloud service providers, are typically not included in the MSP's contract. Any issues or interruptions caused by these services may also be excluded from the MSP's liability
-
Client Responsibilities and Non-Compliance
If the client fails to comply with their obligations under the contract, such as maintaining current software licenses or hardware warranties, the MSP may not be responsible for any resulting issues and may charge extra for resolving them
-
Audit and Compliance Services
Specialized audit and compliance services, such as regulatory audits or specific industry compliance checks, are often not included in standard managed services agreements and may be billed as additional services
-
Excess Fees for Non-Covered Services
Services that are not covered under the flat-fee agreement, such as on-site work beyond the agreed-upon hours or support for non-standard devices, may incur excess fees
Understanding these exclusions is crucial to avoid unexpected costs and ensure a clear understanding of what is included and excluded from the managed services agreement.
